Doyle believes that, despite United’s run of good form, their demanding fixture schedule might provide Wolves with the opportunity for a shock result. “United have so many games and, no matter how good a player you are, with that amount of matches, it is difficult to do it week in and week out,” he said.

“The way the league is going this season, I would not write us off on Saturday. There have been plenty of surprise results.”

However, the Republic of Ireland striker understands that defeating the newly crowned League Cup champions will not be easy and a similar performance to the one that nearly unsettled Chelsea will be required. Wolves went down 2-0.

“We could have easily got something from the Chelsea game, and if we can play like that against Manchester United, we can get something,” he said.

Wolves are seventeenth in the Premier League with 11 games remaining and Doyle appreciates the importance of any points as the season reaches its climax: “Every game is massive for us now in the fight for survival. Everyone is on their toes and fighting for our Premier League lives.”

This is a topic that is often reoccurring in football circles, and the questions that need to be asked are Rangers and Celtic good enough to play in the premiership and what would be the resulting effect for the Scottish league. It is quite clear they have outlived the SPL. Since it was formed in 1998, in a similar split that English football had made in 1992 to create the English Premiership, only the two Glasgow giants have ever won the title, with Celtic leading with six to Rangers five. Before the SPL the last Scottish champion was Aberdeen in 1985, at a time when a Mr. Alex Ferguson was manager and Margaret Thatcher was in power. No other club, apart from Glaswegian duo has even amounted double figures of titles in the leagues 116 year history, so should the possibility of a transaction be considered. Could bringing Celtic and Rangers into English football create a greater push on challenges for the English title and the four Champions League spots or could it just add more competition for the few Uefa Cup spots that are available at the end of the season. Surely more challenges on the mid ranking and high ranking teams can only enhance English and Scottish football to levels so highly desired by the British public.

Rangers and Celtic, despite domestic dominance, have failed to show any consistency in a push for European success. Although both clubs have reached the Uefa Cup final since the turn of the millennium neither side have won a European trophy since Rangers won the, now defunct, Cup Winners Cup in 1972. After three games Rangers sit rock bottom of the group stages of the 2009/10 Champions league without a win and suffering a humiliating home defeat to Unirea Urziceni, a team that in 2003 were in the third tier of Romanian football. Celtic were outplayed by Arsenal in qualification for the Champions League and find themselves also without a win in the new formed Europa League. With the gradual improvement of the Premierships mid table teams, Aston Villa, Everton, Fulham, all representing England in the Europa league and Tottenham Hotspurs and the revamped Man City pushing for Champions League places, there seems very limited place for Celtic and Rangers to do anything other than undermine their own countries league frail reputation.

Currently there are six welsh teams playing in English football leagues ranging from Merthyr Tydfil, who currently play in the Southern League which feeds to the conference leagues, up to Cardiff and Swansea City currently playing in the Championship the second tier of the football hierarchy system. These teams have contributed fantastic British talent to world of football, most notably the late John Charles who is considered by many as the greatest all-round players that the home nations have ever produced, and was the first ever welsh man in the English football hall of fame. So could the integration of these two Scottish giants bring an influx of young Scottish talent? What is more likely is the transition would provide a greater income, generated from one of world footballs richest leagues, and a desire to succeed force Celtic and Rangers, like so many other of the premiership high-fliers, to look abroad for talent rather than paying over the odds for home grown talent. When Scotland defeated France on the 12th September 2007 in the World Cup qualifying rounds seven of the starting eleven where based in Scotland and all of those seven ply their trade in Glasgow. However the success that seemed could come from that astonishing victory never materialized as Scotland failed to qualify for the 2008 European Championship and since then the 2010 World Cup.

We must also consider the negative affect on Scottish football that might occur if the SPL’s two biggest teams were to join England’s top flight. It is possible that without the two dominant forces in Scottish football it could raise in popularity with a title race being thrown wide open, but it is a much more probable scenario that sponsorship and interest would drop in order to follow Celtic and Rangers in England. Finally, could a team like Hearts, who have had vast amounts of cashed poured into the club, be disgruntled that they are left behind in the Scottish League. The Scottish Side were in dire financial difficulties in mid 2004, before Russian Lithuania banker Vladimir Romanov began to buy up shares, he now currently has full control of the club and has made it no secret that he wants Hearts to break the two horse race for the Scottish Premiership title and one day win the Champions League, the highest honor for any European Club side, which Celtic are the only Scottish club to win.

Simply Celtic and Rangers currently lack the talent to make the move south of the boarder anything but a benefit to the Scottish clubs own pockets. The damage to remaining Scottish club teams could be lasting although the national team could benefit from their players facing stiffer competition week in week out. As things stand there is no appeal for the English F.A. to consider integrating the Scottish giants.
